DEGALAN® PVC Impact Modifiers

The impact modifier particles are bound into the matrix through the entanglement of their free chain ends with the PVC molecules. Elastomeric impact modifiers impart impact strength to inherently brittle PVC and have hardly any negative influence on its other mechanical properties. The use of core-shell impact modifiers leads to balanced rigidity, impact strength and hardness. The thermoplastic properties of PVC are hardly influenced at all by core-shell particles.

The effectiveness of the impact modifier depends on the ratio between the soft acrylic rubber core and the surrounding shell, as well as on the degree of crosslinking of the rubber and the size of the primary particles. Emulsion polymerization provides a precisely defined particle size that ensures homogenous distribution in the PVC matrix combined with improved processing latitude. Acrylic impact modifiers increase the weather resistance and UV stability of PVC products. Their chemical composition makes DEGALAN^® impact modifiers particularly suitable for use in unplasticized PVC products in outdoor applications.
